Mahalet Dejene


Mahalet was born in the northeastern Ethiopian city of Dire Dawa. The story goes she was a performer as soon as she left the womb. She danced at weddings, sang atop classroom tables and wove tall tales of a career in American movies she knew she was going to have. She immigrated to the US when she was six, where she attended a performing arts middle school and performed in plays throughout her youth. She excelled academically and matriculated from New York University with high honors in Journalism and Spanish. After working in television news for a wink over a year, she quit her job and starting focusing exclusively on acting. Her first professional job was a voiceover for a digital storybook and while the project folded, it still sparked her fire to keep going. As her favorite quote by WH Murray says, “Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, magic and power in it. Begin it now.” The work continues xx
