Laura Baranik


Laura Baranikis a New York City-based actress and company member of the Obie Award-winning off-Broadway theatre troupe Bedlam.

Laura was born in Toronto, Canada to Slovak refugees. At the age of eight, her family moved back to Czechoslovakia, where Laura attended the International School of Prague until relocating to New York to pursue her B.F.A. in Drama at N.Y.U.’s Tisch School of the Arts.

In 2016, Laura performed nearly 300 times as Fanny Dashwood and Lucy Steele in Bedlam’s hit off-Broadway adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility.A New York Times Critic’s Pick, Sense received four extensions, was nominated for a Drama League Award and two Lucille Lortel Awards, and won the Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Unique Theatrical Experience. Laura’s performance as Nina in another Bedlam play, the North American premiere of Anya Reiss’s adaptation of The Seagull, prompted The Wall Street Journal to call her “a major find” in the “Best Classical Production of 2014.”

As an Associate Artist with Prague Shakespeare Company, Laura has appeared in numerous classical productions on some of Europe’s most renowned stages, among them the Czech National Theatre’s Estates and Kolowrat theatres. Her family (including her much-loved Norwich terrier, Teddy) continues to live in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and although she is now an immigrant to the U.S., she still considers Prague home.

In addition to acting, Laura is a freelance writer and editor. Her most notable work to date was published in the prestigious Czech daily newspaper Lidové Noviny, where for two years she served as chief restaurant critic in collaboration with her own (now-defunct) food blog, The Prague Spoon. She is currently planning the launch of a new, NYC-oriented writing project.
