Claire Avakian was born in Portland, OR where she grew up dancing and performing through Westside Dance Academy. She was trained in a wide variety of styles including tap, hip-hop, ballet, acrobatics, theatre jazz, and contemporary. She discovered her love for singing in high school and decided to pursue theatre, where she could explore her voice and her movement. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2015 with a BFA in Musical Theatre.
Claire’s worked at many regional theatres including The MUNY, Music Theatre Wichita, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, and the Broadway Rose. Some of her favorite credits include Thoroughly Modern Millie (Millie), A Chorus Line, The Drowsy Chaperone, Tarzan, and West Side Story.
When she’s not performing, Claire explores her other interests - hiking, walking (and snuggling) dogs, John Denver, intersectional feminism, and choreographing.
Claire owes a great amount of her accomplishments and drive to her teacher and director, Lyn Cramer. She also finds great inspiration in the work of Sonya Tayeh, Lauren Edson, and Chase Brock.
Claire sees dance and art as a chance to relate to one-another on the most human level: “I strive to create art that can widen our scope of human emotion. I want those who follow my story to discover that all feelings are acceptable, justifiable, and universal. I want my audience and fellow artists to feel a powerful energy and a sense of togetherness. I want to celebrate our differences as individuals, while revealing our deepest similarities as human beings. I am an honest and invested artist, excited to collaborate and discover in the creative process.”
Claire’s favorite quote and motto to live by comes from the brilliant Maya Angelou: “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
