Shakira West is known for being an emotion provoking and powerful performer. A native of Philadelphia, PA and raised by two parents who instilled in her to be the best at anything she tries, dance was not an exception. She began her dance training with Bodies in Motions Performing Arts and Dance at the tender age of 3 when it was just an up and coming Hip Hop company in the basement of the director’s home. She later honed her craft training in Ballet, Modern, Jazz, and Tap at Bodies in Motion’s official studio for 12 years where she also competed in competitions such as Starbound, Beyond the Stars, Onstage, and many more. When deciding which high school to attend, Shakira really wanted to cultivate her craft so she attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts as a dance major where she was exposed to a new world of dance and opportunities.
During her matriculation at Creative Performing Arts, Shakira participated in ABC’s Holiday parades, choreographed for the dance department, and trained under numerous instructors such as those from the Rock School of Ballet, Rutgers University, University of the Arts, and Dance Theater of Harlem to mention a few. She also was given a full scholarship for The University of the Arts summer intensive program. In 2011 she became a member of Eleone Dance Theater second company where she was extensively trained in Graham, Horton, and Limón. It was here she gained a better appreciation for the artistry of modern dance. This also prepared her for more professional work. During her senior year, she was presented with the opportunity to dance for the artist Bobby Valentino. She later went on to work with artists GoGo Morrow and Ashanti.
Shakira’s current motto is “the only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.” She hopes to inspire others and take the world by storm.
