John Carrafa choreographs for film, television and Broadway, splitting his time between Los Angeles and New York. Variety called him one of Hollywood's "Top Ten New Talents to Watch” and The New York Times said his choreography is “inspired comic genius and seemingly connected to the entire history of theatrical choreography, blithely quoting Jerome Robbins, Bob Fosse and Michael Bennett."
For his work in film and television, he’s won the World Dance Award and the Media Choreography Honors and worked closely with many of the biggest stars in Hollywood, including Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway and Tom Hanks. For THE POLAR EXPRESS he pioneered the use of motion capture technology to create choreography on film. Recent projects include the shows TRANSPARENT, THE KNICK, EMPIRE, THE BLACK LIST, BLUE BLOODS and the film REBEL IN THE RYE, to be released in 2017.
On Broadway, he’s a two-time Tony Nominee, having choreographed 10 shows including URINETOWN and INTO THE WOODS. He also has an Obie Award, Lucille Lortel Award and Dora Award, as well as nominations for Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards, for his work in the theater. He directed and choreographed the original musical GOOD VIBRATIONS on Broadway and the dark circus, CIRQUE BERZERK at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
As Creative Director for the National Basketball Association, he produced and directed arena shows televised live internationally on NBC and ESPN, directing multiple camera shoots and producing every aspect of the live television broadcasts.
